# Inferring the category

*New in version 6.16.*

When having the NLP API infer the category, a special value for the category is included: "auto". This should be set wherever setting the category value is available.

When setting the category to "auto", the subcategory will automatically be set to "auto" in all cases, so only setting the category is necessary. Setting the category to `None` is also supported in Python, but in most other cases (config file, CLI) setting parameters to None is impossible, so for consistency and clarity it's best to use the "auto" string in all cases.

> **Warning**
>
> The default category/subcategory remains "Clinical/generic".

## Examples

The config file in TOML format requires string values for the category, so you can set it to "auto":

**`config.toml`**

```toml title="config.toml"
[emtellipro]
[process]
category = "auto"
```

Similarly the CLI `process --category` option requires an argument:

```bash
emtellipro-db-client process --category auto [...]
```

However, in Python one can use either "auto" or None:

```python
from emtellipro.load import readfile
# both of these will have the same effect
loaded_file = readfile('path/to/doc.txt', category='auto')
loaded_file = readfile('path/to/doc.txt', category=None)
```

Every place where a function/class accepts a 'category' parameter, it can be set to "auto" or None.
