Ontology Search
The NLP API extracts medical terms and maps them to defined concepts in multiple ontologies - associating them with the correct concept identifiers in a given ontology. The NLP API currently supports a growing set of biomedical ontologies: SNOMED CT, UMLS (Unified Medical Language System), Medcin, Radlex, LOINC, and ICD10. The choice of which ontology is used is determined by your data set. Each ontology is optimized for specific clinical uses e.g. Radlex is typically with Radiology reports, ICD10 for coding disorders for billing. However, for general purpose data exploration, we recommend using SNOMED CT.
The example queries in this section feature the ICD10 ontology, but the query pattern shown can be used to return extracted terms using any appropriate ontology. For more examples of ontology searches, see Database schema documentation, Entity-level Tables section.
Please note that NLP API can be extended to support other terminology projects. Contact support@emtelligent.com if you need an ontology that is not currently supported.
